You spent two hours polishing your CV. You hit send. And then — nothing.
No callback. No email. Not even an automated rejection.
In the UAE job market, this is more common than most people realise. And the most likely reason isn't your qualifications — it's that your CV never made it past the ATS.
ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software is used by the majority of mid-to-large employers in the UAE — including banks, government contractors, hospitality groups, and multinationals operating out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The system scans, scores, and filters CVs before any human ever opens them.
If your CV isn't optimised for it, you're invisible.
Here's a 10-point checklist to fix that.
✅ The ATS CV Checklist for UAE Job Seekers
1. Use a Clean, Single-Column Layout
ATS software reads CVs like plain text. It struggles with:
- Multi-column layouts
- Text inside tables or text boxes
- Headers and footers with contact information
- Logos, profile photos, or decorative graphics
What to do: Use a simple top-to-bottom layout. One column. No sidebars. Your name and contact details at the very top, not inside a designed header block.
2. Include the Right Keywords From the Job Description
ATS systems score your CV based on keyword matches. If the job post says "supply chain management" and your CV says "logistics coordination," you may score low — even if the skills are identical.
What to do: Read the job description carefully. Mirror the exact phrases used for required skills, tools, and qualifications. Don't paraphrase.
Focus on:
- Job title keywords (e.g. "Sales Executive" not just "Sales")
- Required tools (e.g. "SAP", "Salesforce", "AutoCAD")
- Certifications (e.g. "PMP", "CFA Level 1", "IELTS 7.0")
- Industry terms common in UAE job postings
3. Use Standard Section Headings
ATS systems are trained to find sections with familiar names. Custom headings confuse them.
Use these exact headings:
- Work Experience (not "My Journey" or "Career Highlights")
- Education (not "Academic Background")
- Skills (not "What I Bring")
- Certifications
- Summary or Professional Profile
Anything creative gets misread or skipped entirely.
4. Submit as PDF (But Check the Job Posting First)
PDF is the safest format for preserving your layout when a human views it — but some older ATS platforms parse Word documents (.docx) more reliably.
What to do:
- Default to PDF unless the job posting specifies Word format
- Never submit as .pages, .jpg, or a Canva export link
- Make sure your PDF is text-based, not a scanned image
If you're unsure, submitting both is acceptable when applying via email.
5. Write Dates in a Consistent Format
ATS software parses employment dates to calculate experience duration. Inconsistent formats cause parsing errors.
Use this format throughout:
- May 2022 – March 2024 ✅
- 05/2022 – 03/2024 ✅
- May '22 – Mar '24 ❌
- 2022–Present ✅ (for current role)
Never leave dates ambiguous. If a role is ongoing, write "Present" not "Now" or "Current."
6. Spell Out Acronyms (Then Use the Short Form)
UAE companies span dozens of industries and use industry-specific acronyms. ATS systems search for exact matches — so if a recruiter searches "Human Resources" and your CV only says "HR," it might not surface.
What to do: Introduce acronyms in full on first use.
- "Human Resources (HR)" ✅
- "Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)" ✅
- "Business Development (BD)" ✅
After the first mention, you can use the short form freely.
7. Include Your UAE Contact Details and Visa Status
This is unique to the UAE market. Recruiters — and ATS keyword filters — often screen for location and work authorisation before reviewing qualifications.
Include in your personal details:
- UAE mobile number with +971 prefix
- Professional email address (not a nickname)
- City (Dubai / Abu Dhabi / Sharjah)
- Nationality
- Visa status (e.g. "Employment Visa", "Visit Visa — available immediately", "Husband/Wife Sponsorship")
Some ATS systems filter out applicants who don't appear to be locally based. Don't let that be you.
8. Quantify Achievements in Your Experience Bullets
ATS systems are increasingly sophisticated. Newer platforms do basic semantic analysis — they score CVs higher when they contain measurable outcomes, not just job duties.
Even if the system doesn't parse them, quantified bullets impress human reviewers immediately after.
Weak: "Managed social media accounts for the company."
Strong: "Managed 4 social media channels, growing total followers by 38% in 6 months."
The formula: Action verb + task + measurable result.
Use numbers wherever you genuinely can. Percentages, AED figures, team sizes, timelines — all count.
9. Avoid Images, Icons, and Infographic Elements
This should be obvious but it's one of the most common mistakes on UAE CVs — especially those designed in Canva or downloaded from Pinterest.
ATS cannot read:
- Skill bar graphs (e.g. "Excel ████░░ 80%")
- Profile photos embedded in the layout
- Icons next to contact details
- Coloured section dividers that are actually images
What to do: Strip all of it. Use plain text for skills. Keep dividers as simple horizontal lines. Remove your photo unless a job posting explicitly requests one (rare in most UAE private sector roles).
10. Keep It to One or Two Pages Maximum
UAE recruiters — especially in fast-moving sectors like real estate, retail, and hospitality — expect concise CVs.
Guidelines:
- Fresh graduates and candidates with under 5 years experience: 1 page
- Mid-career professionals (5–10 years): 1–2 pages
- Senior professionals and specialists (10+ years): 2 pages maximum
ATS systems don't penalise length directly, but long CVs with repeated or padded content score lower on relevance — and lose human attention fast.
Every line should earn its place.
