If you're applying from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar to jobs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or the wider UAE, your CV needs adapting. Not because Pakistani CVs are wrong, but because the two markets have different conventions, and UAE recruiters and their ATS software read against theirs. The changes are predictable: remove the CNIC, father's name, religion and declaration block that Pakistani forms demand, add visa status, nationality and notice period, cut to one or two pages, and rewrite duties as measured results. Here's the exact checklist, plus the two things specific to this route: HEC attestation and the licensed-agency rules. The all-nationality version is our expat CV guide for the UAE; this page is the Pakistan-specific layer on top of it.
Why does a Pakistan-format CV read wrongly in Dubai?
Pakistanis are the second-largest expatriate community in the UAE, behind Indians, with press estimates of roughly 1.5 to 2 million people (Pakistan Observer, April 2025); the UAE publishes no nationality breakdown, so every stock figure is an estimate. The outbound flow is official: according to Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) data reported by Gulf News in January 2025, 64,130 Pakistanis moved to the UAE on work visas in 2024, out of 727,381 Pakistanis who registered for overseas employment that year. That UAE figure was a steep fall from the more than 230,000 recorded for 2023 (BEOE and OEC figures reported by ProPakistani, June 2024), and in the first seven months of 2025 only 13,865 Pakistanis arrived on employment visas (BEOE figures, Gulf News, July 2025).
So Dubai recruiters still see Pakistani CVs every day, and the field is more competitive than it was. A CV that opens with a CNIC number and a father's name tells a recruiter it was written for a Pakistani government form; a missing visa line forces a follow-up question most recruiters won't make; a table of matric marks breaks the parser. None of this is a judgement on your experience. It is mechanics, fixable in an afternoon.
What should you remove from a Pakistani CV for UAE jobs?
These fields are standard on Pakistani public-sector application forms and on most private-sector CVs that copy them. Delete every one:
- CNIC number and passport number. Identity documents are shared at offer stage for visa processing, never on a CV that gets forwarded.
- Father's name (or husband's name). A South Asian convention with no UAE equivalent.
- Religion. Not a UAE CV field.
- Domicile. It exists for Pakistan's provincial quota system and means nothing to a Dubai employer.
- Marital status. Not expected. Date of birth is optional in the UAE; if you keep it, one line, and never beside an ID number.
- The declaration and signature line. "I hereby declare that the above information is true", with a signature, place and date, is a subcontinent convention. UAE CVs end after skills or certifications.
- Matric and intermediate mark sheets. Once you hold a degree or a professional qualification, school-board percentages come off. Tables of marks also parse badly in ATS software.
- Full postal address. "Karachi, Pakistan" is enough.
- The photo, unless the sector expects one. Pakistani forms demand a passport-size photo; in the UAE a headshot is optional and sector-dependent. Our UAE CV photo guide has the sector table.
What should you add for the UAE?
- Visa status, in one plain line. UAE work visas are employer-sponsored,
so recruiters read this line to understand the logistics before they read
anything else. Use the wording that matches your position:
- Applying from Pakistan: "Pakistani national, based in Lahore, available to relocate on offer."
- In the UAE on a visit visa: "Visit visa, available immediately." Pakistani missions in the UAE issued guidelines in September 2024 (reported by Khaleej Times) telling visit-visa holders not to take up employment on a visit visa and to verify employers through government channels. Looking is fine; working before the permit is not.
- Employed in the UAE: "Employment visa, transferable, 30-day notice."
- Between jobs in the UAE: "Cancelled visa, available immediately."
- Nationality. Expected on Gulf CVs, unlike most Western markets.
- Notice period or availability. Pakistani notice periods of one to three months are often longer than a UAE hiring manager assumes. State yours up front so the offer stage holds no surprises.
- Phone number with country code. A Pakistani mobile written as 0300 1234567 becomes +92 300 1234567 (drop the leading zero); a UAE number written as 050 123 4567 becomes +971 50 123 4567.
- A professional summary of two or three factual sentences tied to the target role, in place of "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation". Our professional summary examples show the pattern.
- Languages with levels. Urdu, English and Punjabi, Pashto or Sindhi is a useful combination in UAE retail, logistics, security and hospitality. Arabic at any level goes first.
- A LinkedIn URL. Widely checked by UAE recruiters.
How do you present Pakistani qualifications on a UAE CV?
List your highest qualification first with institution, city, country and year: BSc Computer Science, FAST-NUCES, Lahore, Pakistan, 2020. Then deal with recognition, because it is the question every UAE employer asks at offer stage. Three facts matter:
- HEC attestation is the first step for a Pakistani degree. The Higher Education Commission runs a fully online Degree Attestation System at eservices.hec.gov.pk: the awarding university verifies the degree against its records and HEC issues an e-attestation certificate. HEC does not attest foreign degrees (it issues an equivalence letter instead), and it publishes the list of recognised universities and degree-awarding institutions that attestation offices work from. Matric and intermediate certificates go through the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC).
- Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests after HEC. The Pakistan Consulate General in Dubai states on its attestation page that it will only attest a degree already "duly attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC)" and by MoFA, for AED 40 per degree, with the applicant or a blood relative present in person.
- An apostille does not replace legalisation on this route. Pakistan became a party to the Hague Apostille Convention on 9 March 2023 (HCCH status table), but the UAE is not a party, so the embassy and ministry chain still applies. Confirm the exact UAE-side steps (the UAE Embassy in Islamabad, then MOFAIC inside the UAE) with your employer's PRO before you start, because the embassy procedure has changed over time.
On the CV itself, one line does the work: BBA, University of the Punjab, 2019 (HEC-attested), or (attestation in progress). Professional bodies travel well if you name them: ACCA, CA (ICAP), PEC for engineers, PMDC/PMC for doctors. UAE licences (DHA, DoH, MOHAP) belong on the CV only once you hold them.
How do you write experience bullets when your results are in PKR?
The Pakistani CV habit is a duty list: "Responsible for sales and recovery in the Lahore region." UAE recruiters shortlist on results, so each bullet needs a measure, and the trap is choosing measures that force a currency conversion. The rule: prefer measures that need no conversion, and fix the notation on the ones that do.
- Percentages, headcounts, volumes and timeframes travel unchanged: grew regional sales 28% year on year, led a team of 14 recovery officers, cut average collection time from 61 to 38 days.
- Where a money figure is essential, write it in international notation. Lakh and crore are not read in the UAE. Rs 4 crore becomes PKR 40 million; Rs 25 lakh becomes PKR 2.5 million.
- If you add an AED equivalent, check the live rate the day you write it, round honestly and mark it approximate.
- Name the systems and standards (SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, ISO 9001). Gulf recruiters recognise systems even when they have never heard of the employer.
One bullet, before and after
The candidate below is fictional and used only to show the rewrite.
Before (typical Pakistan-format CV):
Worked as Assistant Manager Accounts at a textile company in Faisalabad. Responsible for payables, receivables, bank reconciliation and monthly closing. Hardworking and able to work under pressure.
After (UAE-ready):
Assistant Manager, Accounts | Faisalabad textile exporter (PKR 1.2 billion turnover) | 2021 to 2024
- Closed monthly accounts for three business units in SAP, cutting the close from 12 working days to 7.
- Reduced overdue receivables 35% in 18 months by introducing weekly ageing reviews with the sales team.
- Managed payables for 140 suppliers and reconciled nine bank accounts with zero audit findings in two external audits.
Same person, same job. The second version gives a recruiter scale, a named system and three results they can read without a calculator.
What ATS rules apply to a UAE CV?
Most large UAE employers filter CVs with software before a human reads them, and the Pakistani-format elements that break parsing are exactly the ones above: mark-sheet tables, a photo pasted over text, two-column layouts and scanned PDFs. The rules are short:
- Single column. Sidebars and two-column templates get read out of order.
- Real text, not an image. A scanned or photographed CV is invisible to an ATS. Export a text-based PDF.
- No tables for layout. None.
- Standard headings and consistent dates. "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills"; "Jan 2021 to Mar 2024", every entry the same way.
- The job ad's words. If the posting says "accounts receivable", do not write only "recovery". Paste the ad into JD Match to see which requirements your CV already covers.
The full market conventions, including length and section order, are in our UAE CV format guide for 2026.
Should you go through a recruitment agency?
Many Pakistani candidates reach the UAE through a recruiter rather than a direct application, and this route has rules worth knowing.
Under Pakistan's Emigration Ordinance 1979, anyone who recruits or assists Pakistanis to emigrate for work must hold an Overseas Employment Promoter (OEP) licence, and the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment publishes the list of valid licences on beoe.gov.pk. The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis' FAQ advises checking the licence and the approved job demand, reading the terms carefully and insisting on a receipt for any payment; fake agents are referred to the Federal Investigation Agency. In June 2024 the BEOE said only 2,577 OEP licences were valid while more than 5,048 had been invalidated (APP, reported by Aaj TV), which is the clearest reason to check the list rather than trust a letterhead.
Three practical points follow:
- A direct application needs no agency. If a UAE employer sponsors your visa, the OEP system does not enter into it. Emigrant registration and the Protector of Emigrants stamp happen after the offer.
- None of this goes on the CV. No UAE recruiter looks for a Protector stamp or a BEOE number. It matters when someone asks how soon you can join.
- The fraud tells are universal. Legitimate employers and licensed agencies never charge you for a job offer, a work visa or an interview. Treat an offer that arrives before any interview as a scam, verify the company through its own website, and keep your original certificates.
Next step
Run your adapted CV through the free ATS resume checker, which includes UAE-specific checks for visa status and nationality, then build or rebuild it in the free UAE CV builder: visa-status and nationality fields, single-column ATS-tested templates that work with or without a photo, no watermark. The free Dubai CV maker page explains what the builder does for that market specifically.
The same checklist adapted for other paperwork is in our guides for applicants from India and applicants from Nepal. The CV mechanics are shared; the attestation chain and the agency rules are not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I put my CNIC number on a CV for UAE jobs?
No. A CNIC number is a Pakistani identity document reference and UAE recruiters have no use for it on a CV. The same goes for your passport number. Both are shared with the employer at offer stage for visa processing, never on a document that gets forwarded between recruiters and hiring managers. Replace the ID block with nationality, current city and visa status.
Do UAE employers want father's name, religion or domicile on a CV?
No. Father's name, religion, domicile and marital status are fields that Pakistani public-sector application forms demand and that many private Pakistani CVs copy. None of them is a UAE CV convention. Domicile in particular means nothing outside Pakistan's provincial quota system. Remove all four and use the space for a two-line professional summary.
How do I write visa status on a UAE CV if I am applying from Pakistan?
State your position in one plain line near the top. Applying from Pakistan: 'Pakistani national, based in Lahore, available to relocate on offer'. Already in the UAE: 'Visit visa, available immediately', 'Employment visa, transferable, 30-day notice', or 'Cancelled visa, available immediately'. UAE work visas are employer-sponsored, so recruiters read this line to understand logistics before they read your experience.
Does my Pakistani degree need HEC attestation for a UAE job?
Usually yes, at offer stage rather than application stage. HEC runs a fully online Degree Attestation System at eservices.hec.gov.pk for degrees from the universities on its recognised list. The Pakistan Consulate in Dubai will only attest a degree that is already attested by HEC and by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the CV, one line such as 'BBA, University of the Punjab, 2019 (HEC-attested)' answers the question before it is asked.
Should I convert PKR figures to AED on my CV?
Prefer measures that need no conversion: percentages, headcounts, volumes and timeframes travel between markets without a calculator. Where a money figure is essential, write it in international notation (PKR 40 million, not Rs 4 crore) because lakh and crore are not read in the UAE. If you add an AED equivalent, check the live rate the day you write it, round honestly and mark it as approximate.
Do I need a BEOE-registered agency to get a job in Dubai?
Only if you are using an agency at all. Under Pakistan's Emigration Ordinance 1979, anyone recruiting Pakistanis for work abroad must hold an Overseas Employment Promoter licence, and the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment publishes the list of valid licences. If you apply directly to a UAE employer, no agency is involved. If an agency approaches you, check its licence on beoe.gov.pk, insist on receipts, and treat anyone selling a visa or a guaranteed offer as a fraud.
